Happy New Year 2010!

2009 is about to end. It was a year when the charity accomplished many things and the people from Mina and Vulcan are grateful for that. The hospital director texted me wishing a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
So do I, want to wish everyone a Happy New Year in 2010, and keep up the good work!

All the best to you and your families,

Istvan

22.12.1989 - 22.12.2009

20 years of freedom in Romania. 20 years without Ceausescu or comunism. People died for it and blood was shed. We should be grateful for it.

Yesterday in the village

It is proper winter here. The Dacia could not go further, so stopped at the village center. Glad that helpers came and helped us taking the gifts up to the hospital.

Once arrived we distributed the gifts, and once again Karina gladly helped. The ladies got colored socks, the men black ones. Everybody was very grateful. Someone was asking for cigarettes, but understand immediatly that we don't have. After giving out, we went in towards some wards where the patients are in bed, who can not get up, and gave their presents. Met friendly figures like Simon, Costica, Afuza...

As you can see, the kitchen has now new steps. The decoration of the kitchen was not something extraordinary: They painted the walls and replaced a few broken floor tiles. The contractor has gone, no more money for major works. So the decoration of the new wards is now the responsability of the staff. Downstairs of the flat is very cold and the work goes on very slowly.

In this small room there is a very small radiator and windows not very good. They try their best...
And finally a picture taken before departure from the snowy hospital.

Patients gifts are ready and food for hospital is delivered

Yesterday we have made the bags for the patients, especially Karina made them. These are the Christmas presents for all the patients. These will be distributed tomorrow at the hospital together with the Christmas cards. Each patient will get: 1 Christmas card, 1 pair of socks, 1Snickers chocolate, 1 kitkat chocolate wafer and one pack of biscuits. This is now ready, they are purchased from Carrefour.

Today we have been at the Metro from where we have bough food for the hospital: corn flower, bags of pasta, tomato sauce, liver paste, tins of fish, cooking oil, cheese, milk powder, lemons, vanilla sugar, yeast, cooking powder, turkish delight. The last ones are used at the hospital to make Christmas cake for the patients, and I am glad we contributed towards it. In addition I bought 2 boxes of soap (144 of them), as they had no soap left for the patients. The driver of the hospital came along and helped in the delivery of the food. Yesterday and this morning was snowing so driving had to be slowly.

In the village

I have paid today the dentist in Vulcan, for the past months and than I went to Mina 1 Mai, where I met the head nurse and many other people. I got the list from the head nurse, what they want for Christmas, basically the same food plus soap. They have no soap left. Their request it was today that if I make individual bags for the patients as we used to, to reduce the sweets and include a pair of socks for each patient, as they do not have socks. I noted this, so next week I'll go shopping and make a food delivery and than each patient will get a goodie bag. The photos below were taken today.

Meeting with Damian Galvin

Today I had a meeting with Damian Galvin, a british citizen who is living for 2 years now in Brasov. He wrote some time ago to Peter Tolson offering his help towards the charity. I visited him today for almost one hour, I explained the work we did and do in the village, and he also informed me about his activity. It was a pleasant meeting. The place where he lives is in the same street where the green Eminescu hospital is, just a few houses further. They have an office near to the Brasov main square.

Than  I visited the garage and replaced the old electric rely with anew one for the car. Glad it was cheap, this time.
Later on I went to the post office and have received the package from John and Nona Hexter, including the postcards for the patients. A big thank you for them.

The new sewing room

The new sewing room is almost finished. In fact the inside work is done, but the three phase electrical wiring still needs to be fitted. During the last week they have started to move in. Their request is that next year we should fit another window on the left side wall, under the existing one or next to it. I also got the receipts for the money we gave them. The contractor will render the outside of the building when they will finish the work at the dining room.

We are asked to fit a new window under this one or at the right side of this.

Mid October winter

It is mid October and also a proper winter. Temperature mid day is 1 C and is snowing continously since early morning.
We have one door handle broken of a new aluminum door, and I have called the company to replace it as they offered 5 year warranty. Today I called them again, as it seems it will take a while till they come and do the job.

Doors and windows project finalized

All the contracted windows and doors and finished and well fitted. Mostly have secured reinforced glass. Some have PVC profiles and some aluminum ones. All the doors and windows also have locks and keys. This project was finalized today, when I signed for receiving them. Yesterday Dr. Grigoriu and the Dutch people examined the building and they concluded that an excellent job it has been done, well, and they were happy.
We have received 5 years of warranty for all the glasses and also 10 years warranty for the PVC and aluminum profiles. This NNRT project was financed by the LDS church, represented by Robert Edwards from Bucharest. A big thank you for them.
